Tobacco smoke contains a cocktail of around 4,000 toxic chemicals, many of which are poisonous gases and can cause cancer and lung disease.
85% of smoke is invisible and odourless and could stay in the atmosphere for several hours.
The smoke of a single cigarette can travel up to 20 metres.
A child growing up in a smokey home is:
- more likely to suffer from ear, nose and throat problems, glue ear, chest infections and asthma
- more likely to be hospitalised as a result of smoking-related illness.
Second hand smoke can affect children more than it affects adults:
- children breath faster as they have smaller lungs, therefore they breath in more second hand smoke, which lingers around the house for many hours
- cot death is less likely for babies raised in smokefree homes.
