March 11th is the date when manufacturers will have to supply retailers with child resistant lighters in the first of a raft of legislation that will impact on the tobacco market during 2007.
The European Commission (EC) recently introduced a ban on non-child resistant lighters, although distributors and retailers will have until March 2008 to allow for the sell-through of non-compliant stock.
EC rules mean lighters will have a more complex ignition process to make it more difficult for children aged less than 4.5 years to use them.
